Payday
is an unvarnished look at a country entertainer on the downhill side of
his career. Maury Dann (Rip Torn), a third-rate country singer
subsisting on whiskey and drugs, is the quintessential scrambling
small-time recording “star.” Payday
takes us through the last 36 hours of Maury Dann’s life. He kills a man
and trades the blind devotion of his driver for freedom from jail;
discards a mistress and has a strained meeting with his ex-wife. Payday won critical acclaim from Pauline Kael at the New Yorker, Peter Schjeldahl the New York Times and Judith Crist at New York Magazine.
